Earliest meeting: Thursday 12th October 1848 Final meeting: Thursday 12th October 1848 The London district of Hornsey lies in the Borough of Haringey some 6 miles north of Charing Cross. It has its own railway station and in the mid-1800s it held its sole race meeting on Thursday 12th October 1848 for Officers of the Guards. The ensuing match was over 2 miles of fair hunting ground on the edge of Hornsey and involved Mr Rowley’s Fancy Boy and Mr Morrant’s Whipcord. Whipcord was made the strong 2/1 On favourite but refused at the fourth fence, a stiff post with rails, enabling Fancy Boy to build up a good lead which he never looked in danger of relinquishing.
